City of Angels won six Tony awards in 1989 including best musical, score, and book. Composer Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity) drew on three decades of theatrical songwriting and his jazz background to create the first full-blown jazz score for the Broadway stage. Gags and wisecracks abound in this deliciously funny spoof of 1940s film noir and hard-edged detective fiction.
City of Angels is like experiencing two shows in one. It is the interweaving of two plots, one dealing with the writing of a screenplay in the legendary Hollywood of the '40s; the other, the enactment of that screenplay. This double feature quality juxtaposes real life and "reel-life" on a number of levels as lead character/screenwriter Stine weaves the people around him into his characters on the big screen. The two stories are, in effect, happening simultaneously.
Magnificent sets, costumes and lighting help keep the two worlds visually separate. Stone's world is stylistically set in film noir with tones of black, grey and white while in contrast to these stark “reel” images, Stine's real world is set in technicolor. In the end, after show stopping songs coupled with outrageous situations and riotous jokes plus the obligatory romance, the final curtain comes down on two sublimely happy endings.
