Schneider Theater
Directed by Jon Cranney
The poignant, passionate and profound songs of Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel are vividly brought to theatrical life in this marvelously intense musical revue. Evoked quite simply but directly with four actors are Brel's legendary romance, humor and moral conviction. These rich compositions bring to mind the groundbreaking work of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht, brimming with flair, attitude and European sophistication, creating a universe all their own that consistently startles with its daring candor and insight. The sheer musical poetry of each song supports many layers of interpretation. The result is a powerful, intimate, bold and emotional full helping of theater.
The pioneering musical-without-a-book had an evolutionary influence on Broadway and offers up a rich cross-section of Brel's songs about life, death, and love--and typically sharp-eyed observations about the human follies that season them.
The original show ran for more than four years Off-Broadway and along with a recent revival, was nominated for numerous critical awards including the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle.
